Ayurvedic Lentil Soup To Boost Immunity

Dietitian/Health Experts suggest incorporating fibrous lentils into our daily diet. Moong Dal is a lentil which is rich in protein and it also a good source of dietary fiber. Apart from this, it is easy to digest and very simple to make. 




For this recipe, I have not used the pressure cooker. If you wish you can use it. I love making dals/lentil with the slow cooking method. It enhances the flavor and taste. Just make sure you soak the dal for an hour at least or more if you have time.The more time you soak the dal the faster it cooks.

Ingredients for yellow moong dal recipe

Serves: 2 
  • Moong dal – 1 cup 
  • Ghee/Clarified Butter/Vegetable oil – 1 tbsp
  • Tomato – 1 (finely chopped)
  • Red chilly powder – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
  • Green chilly – 1 (finely chopped)
  • Ginger paste – 1 tsp
  • Salt – 2 tsp or as per taste
  • Green coriander – 2 to 3 tbsp (finely chopped)

For Tempering:


  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida – 1 pinch
  • Curry leaves – 6 to 7
  • Whole red chilly  – 2 
  • Red chilly powder – 1 tsp


How to make  Moong Dal


  • Clean the dal thoroughly and wash with water. Soak for at least 1 hour.

  • Chop tomatoes finely.
  • Drain out the water and boil the dal in a pan with 4 cups of water. Add tomatoes, ginger paste, green chilies, salt, turmeric. Stir the dal in between to make sure it does not stick to the bottom of the pan.  Add more water if the dal is not properly cooked or as per the desired consistency you want. It would take around 30 to 40 minutes for the lentils to be properly cooked.
  • Now for tempering, take a separate pan and add ghee in it.When the ghee is hot, add cumin seeds and asafoetida into it. After sautĂ©ing cumin seeds, add whole red chili and saute for 15 to 20 seconds.Add curry leaves and red chili powder. Immediately remove from gas and add the tadka into the cooked lentil. Stir in the tadka and cook for 4 to 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh chopped coriander/cilantro. Scrumptious moong dal is ready. Serve this moong dal curry with chapatti, rice or daliya/broken wheat or relish it on its own.
  • You can prepare more tadka/tempering in the same way as mentioned above and drizzle on top for a fancy presentation and trust me it taste awesome with that extra drizzle of tadka/tempering on it.Your savory dal curry is ready to serve. Enjoy!
